Day at Lake Kaņieris : Paddleboarding and Stroll Along the Reed Trail

Sometimes, it’s refreshing to escape the daily grind and plan something special—a chance to spend quality time together. Having previously walked the Kaņieris Reed Trail and loved it, I knew I had to return and take you with me. However, since the trail itself is quite short, let’s spice things up. Here’s a simple yet delightful plan: we’ll start with a boat or SUP adventure on Lake Kaņieris, follow it with a walk along the Kaņieris reed trail, and end the day with a cozy picnic on the bench near the bird watching tower. It’s a fantastic idea for an active date or even a fun family outing.

Cost: Trail is free, but boat / sup rental costs mondey. Prices & contacts

How to get there: Public transport or driving. We parked in paid parking close to Old town.

What to do by Lake Kaņieris:

Paddleboarding or Boating on Lake Kaņieris

The Logistics of Water Activities on Lake Kaņieris

Given the popularity of Lake Kaņieris and the limited number of paddleboards available, making a reservation for paddleboarding is essential. Fortunately, there are more boats than paddleboards, so securing one of those is generally easier—but it’s still a good idea to check availability in advance.

The staff here are exceptionally helpful, and the paddleboards are in great condition, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable start to our adventure.

The Paddleboarding Experience on Lake Kaņieris

The reason you choose to paddleboard on Lake Kaņieris is undoubtedly for the stunning views. The lake stretches out far beyond what the eye can see, its vastness offering a thrilling sense of freedom, or perhaps a bit of intimidation, depending on your perspective. Regardless, an hour is far from enough to explore it all.

    Ar supu Kaņiera ezerā

So we stay closer to the clusters of reeds near the boat house, where we play little games of hide and seek among them. It’s surprisingly fun to weave between the reeds, racing to see who can circle the next cluster the fastest. But a word of caution—keep an eye out for swans who may be enjoying their own quiet, secluded spots here! I’ve heard they can get quite dangerous if threatened.

Observation Platform of the Lake Kaņieris Boathouse

The boat rental house doubles as a small viewing tower. So, before we head to the birdwatching tower at the trail’s end, don’t forget to climb up here for a view. You can tell me which observation tower you liked the best afterwards. I think the sight of docked boats lined up at the pier adds to the picturesque charm.

A Scenic Walk Along the Kaņieris Reed Trail

This trail is a photographer’s dream. The narrow wooden boardwalk is flanked by towering reeds, gently swaying in the breeze and sheltering you from the outside world. In summer, the reeds are a vibrant green, but in autumn, they dry to a striking grey-brown, transforming the atmosphere entirely.

    Kaņiera niedrāju taka

The floating boardwalk shifts slightly with each step, and the reeds tickle you as you go, adding a whimsical touch to the experience. The only place I can compare this to is Kazdanga Lake, though the reeds there aren’t as tall. Kaņieris’ reed trail really sets the bar high!

The trail is narrow, so walking side-by-side isn’t possible, and passing others can be tricky. A one-way system would make things easier, although I didn’t notice any signs indicating the “correct” direction—perhaps I just missed them.

    Kaņiera taka

The only real downside is that the trail isn’t a loop, meaning we’ll have to retrace our steps to return.

The Lake Kaņieris Bird Watching Tower

Lake Kaņieris is home to many bird species, and an observant visitor can easily witness their daily activities from the birdwatching tower.

    Kaņiera putnu vērošanas tornis

However, even if you’re not a bird watching enthusiast, the tower is still worth a climb for a fresh perspective on the expansive, overgrown lake. While the tower isn’t particularly tall, it offers a wonderful view of the lake’s vastness.

Afterward, you can wrap up your adventure with a relaxing picnic on the spacious benches at the base of the tower.

    Drone View of Lake Kaņieris

Miks has kindly shared a drone eye video of the Lake Kaņieris, so you could witness it from a perspective of a bird. Enjoy!

    Thoughts?

A day at Lake Kaņieris is a simple yet exciting way to enjoy the great outdoors in a beautiful setting. It’s a perfect mix of activity and conversation, making it ideal for a date or family outing. While there are plenty of lakes in Latvia for boating or SUP adventures, Kaņieris stands out for its unique reed trail, which is worth visiting at least once. Even if water activities aren’t your thing, the trail alone makes the trip worthwhile.

  • Kaltenes Kalvas – another mystery of stones of Latvia

Kaltenes Kalvas – another mystery of stones of Latvia

Tucked away in the forests of Kurzeme lies Kaltenes Kalvas Trail, a place shrouded in mystery and legends. Often compared to Pokaiņi Forest for its enigmatic stone formations, this natur trail is dotted with moss-covered rocks said to have been brought here by the devil himself. There are even rumours of magic and tales that this was once a sacred site. Today, it feels like a tranquil, almost otherworldly forest. While the trail is shorter than Pokaiņi, it offers a beautiful, peaceful stroll under the shade of towering trees.

    Location: Kaltenes Kalvas

    Length: 1.7km

How to get there: By car

    In Kaltenes Kalvas:

An enchanting Nature Trail of Stones and Trees in Kaltenes Kalvas

At the trailhead, the first steps are straightforward, though you must watch for roots underfoot. Curiously, there aren’t many stones here yet. You wonder, is this truly the site of Latvia’s largest stone formation? The iconic wooden walkways you saw in photos of Kaltenes Kalvas are also absent, leaving you uneasy. Are we on the right path?

Luckily, we spot other tourists coming from the opposite direction and I ask them: Is there anything remarkable further along?

Their answer is encouraging: “Yes. And it’s beautiful!”

    Ok. Let’s head further then!

Soon, we realise there was no reason for worries as Kaltenes Kalvas finaly reveals its treasures. Stones of all sizes—some solitary, others clustered—begin emerging from the earth like little, mossy troll heads peeking out of tranches.

And the first wooden walkway appears as well. It turns out that the trail is actually a mix between bare earth and newly restored wooden walkways, complete with steps. But that’s alright. The real spectacle is off the path anyways. The forest floor, on both sides, is generously scattered with stones, creating a scene that feels almost magical.

Highlights of Kaltenes Kalvas Nature Trail

As you wander deeper into the trail, a few particularly large boulders emerge from the forest floor, each one demanding your attention. Legends say there were once many more of these stones—some even larger and more varied—but much of this natural treasure was taken in the past for road construction. Thankfully, the remaining stones are now protected, ensuring their mystical presence will endure for generations to come.

    Liels akmens Kaltenes Kalvu dabastakā

One of the more curious sights along the trail is a small pyramid of stones. When I first spotted it, I thought, “Ah, here’s where the stone piles begin!” I had been expecting to see numerous carefully arranged stone formations, similar to those at Pokaiņi. Imagine my surprise when I learned this is the only deliberately made stone pile here. It turns out that the entirety of Kaltenes Kalvas Trail is considered one enormous natural stone formation—hence the frequent mention of stone piles in descriptions of the area.

    Akmeņū krāvums Kaltenes Kalvās

A little further on, you come across a flat stone scattered with coins left by previous visitors. It sparks a sense of curiosity: Are these offerings? Wishes? Could leaving a coin here bring good fortune?

It’s at this point you realize, with a smile, that you’ve arrived on the summer solstice—a delightful coincidence, given the mysterious reputation of Kaltene’s “cousin,” Pokaiņi Forest. There, the solstice is often associated with tales of supernatural occurrences. But here, despite the significance of the day, the forest feels calm, serene, and entirely grounded—no unusual phenomena, just nature at its most peaceful.

Adding to the charm of the trail are small, thoughtfully placed signs providing insights into the local flora and fauna. These little educational touches enrich the experience, making the walk not only beautiful but also informative.

    Thoughts?

Kaltenes Kalvas Trail is wonderfully quiet. Aside from our group, we only encounter one other small party, leaving the trail to be enjoyed in peace. Its tranquility is a defining feature, but at just 1.7 kilometers, the path feels too short to make it a standalone destination for a long journey.

Ieriķi Mill – What Enchanting Surprises Await On This Nature Trail?

The Ieriķi Mill Trail feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Imagine visiting your fairy godmother’s garden – this is likely how it would look. Every twist and turn hides a delightful surprise.

Tiny creatures, crafted from moss and natural materials, greet you along the way, as if waiting for a sprinkle of fairy dust to come alive. Waterfalls murmur their secrets, water spirits peek out from their hiding spots, and the ancient water wheel spins, powered by what seems to be pure magic.

Ieriķi Mill: A Trail of Waterfalls

The promise of cascading waterfalls of all shapes and sizes was what first drew us to Ieriķi Mill. Little did we know that the waterfalls were just the beginning of the magic.

While we didn’t spot the elusive fairy godmother, the wooden boardwalk became our guide, leading us through the wonders of the trail. Follow its path, and you’ll encounter all the natural beauty Ieriķi has to offer – especially the waterfalls.

The tiniest waterfall is just a delicate trickle, barely a handspan tall. In contrast, the largest one is truly impressive, standing 2.4 meters high and spanning 7.5 meters across.

A thoughtfully placed viewing platform ensures you get the best view – and the best photos. It’s almost as if the fairy godmother herself ensured you’d have the perfect spot to admire the scene.

Say Hi to Nature-Inspired Sculptures in Ieriķi Mill

The fairy godmother’s “little helpers” are far from ordinary. These whimsical creations are artfully crafted from moss and other natural materials, blending perfectly with their surroundings. The lizards, in particular, were my favourites, but the mossy deer are equally charming. Don’t forget to say hello as you wander by.

Are You Being Watched? The Secret Inhabitants of Ieriķi Mill

But as you wander through Ieriķi nature trail you can’t seem to shake off a feeling that someone is watching you. But don’t worry  – at Ieriķi Mill, there are no monsters lurking. This is a place of wonder, not fear.

For the keen-eyed explorer, hidden sculptures of playful water spirits await discovery. These mystical creatures hiding in the streams and other places add to the trail’s magical atmosphere.

The Lively Ruins of  Ieriķi Mill

What remains of the historic Ieriķi Mill is a crumbling wall, weathered by time. But don’t let its humble appearance fool you – it still holds a surprise or two.

As you approach, you’ll hear an unusual sound. What could it be? A fairy godmother spinning thread? No – it’s a Ierķi Mills moss-covered water wheel, still turning after all these years. Watching it in motion feels like witnessing a bit of practical magic. It’s a marvel to behold.

The Ieriķi Mill Trail made me feel like a curious child, eager to run and explore every corner. It’s the perfect destination for a family outing or a romantic date. The trail is beautifully maintained, easy to navigate, and compact – just around 1 kilometre in length.

What it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm, packing countless surprises into a small space. Visiting this enchanting “garden” is a colourful and unforgettable adventure.

And if you’re craving more, there are plenty of nearby trails and attractions to add to your journey.

Today, we’re fortunate to visit during rhododendron season, when their vibrant blooms transform the walk into an enchanting dream.

Exploring Lāčupīte Arboretum: Forest Trails That Lead to the Sea

The adventure begins as we search for Lāčupīte Arboretum. The Latvian State Forest sign greets us, but the correct path isn’t immediately obvious. Let’s try heading straight!

No, it looks like we have taken the wrong path as we end up by the calm coast of the Baltic sea. It is so tranquil and beautiful! The sandy shore invites you to pause, sit back, and let the rhythmic waves wash away your thoughts. It would be perfect for a picnic too. We might come back. But it’s not what we were looking for.

Ok. Let’s head back and turn right instead.

    Pastaiga pa mežu Lāčupītes dendrārijā

The forest welcomes you with its tall pines stretching to the sky and a soft carpet of moss and blueberry bushes underfoot. The air feels alive with the scent of the sea and the hum of quiet solitude. On one trail, you stumble across remnants of a small bridge—its ropes and anchors all that remain—adding a touch of mystery to your walk.

    Salūzis tiltiņš

Again, the place is beautiful. But it is not what we were after. So I guess the right trail is the one leading left from the Latvijas Meži Sign!

Lāčupīte Arboretum’s Romantic Wonderland of Blooming Plants

Back on track, you spot the first signs of blooming shrubs—your cue that the heart of Lāčupīte Arboretum is near. Here, the forest transforms into a magical jungle of rhododendrons and other exotic plants. Their colorful blooms add an almost dreamlike quality to the surroundings, making every step feel like a walk through a hidden paradise.

Even if you’re not a plant expert, the beauty of this place speaks for itself. Small plaques discreetly label the flora, letting you connect names to the enchanting specimens around you.

Photo spot: The Fairytale Cabins of Lāčupīte Arboretum

You turn a corner of a path and catch sight of it—the iconic wooden cabin we were looking for. Nestled among the trees, its mossy triangular roof and cheerful curtains make it feel like something straight out of a storybook. Nearby, a second cabin peeks through yellow flowers, its simpler design no less charming.

These cabins seem almost magical, like they belong to gnomes or forest spirits. But they are owned by people, so signs politely remind you not to enter someone else’s property, and you can’t help but wonder what the owners think of all the visitors photographing their enchanting homes. Still, the cabins beg to be captured at least from the distance, their charm impossible to resist.

As you wander further, you notice the visitors around you—couples strolling hand in hand, families exploring, and even elderly pairs enjoying a quiet moment together. And as you leave, you can’t help but feel lighter, as if the arboretum has quietly gifted you its peace and beauty.

    Thoughts?

Whether you’re here for the blooming rhododendrons, the secluded forest trails, or the calming seaside, Lāčupīte Arboretum offers an escape from the ordinary. It’s a place where time slows down, and every step feels like a gentle reminder of nature’s beauty.

As you venture closer, wild horses and cows roam freely, their silhouettes blending into the wild scene. Here at Lake Engure nature park, they don’t seem to be threatened by human presence. Right the opposite – if they sense you have a carrot with you, you’ll probably won’t be able to escape them.

What to expect at Lake Engure Meadows nature park:

Lake Engure Nature Park: Where Meadows Meet Water

Passing through a rustic wooden gate, the landscape opens up before you. Endless green meadows stretch toward the horizon, creating a sense of freedom that makes you pause and take it all in.

As you head toward a small bird watching tower, the Lake Engure meadow transitions into shallow pools of water, where tufts of grass stand submerged. You notice muddy patches—favorite spots for cows to roll around—and beyond, the meadows seamlessly blend into Engure Lake making it hard to tell where one ends and the other starts. Above the water, birds fill the air with their calls, adding a lively soundtrack to the serene scene.

    Zāle ūdenī Engures ezera pļavās

Miks says that the last time he wisited Lake Engure Nature park the landscape was vastly different. Everything was submerged in water back then and the only way to get around was to use the wooden pathways. Today what is left over from those wooden pathways lies on dry ground. I don’t know if it is a seasonal thing or if Engure lake meadows are always like this. But anyways – the place is quite unique in any season.

Unfortunately a small disappointment awaits at the Lake Engure birdwatching tower—the walkway leading to it is broken and cordoned off, leaving climbing impossible. But the beauty of the surroundings more than makes up for it.

Wild Horses and Cows of Lake Engure Meadows

The meadows of Lake Engure are alive with wildlife, and it’s clear the animals here coexist peacefully with each other and the human visitors.

The cows seem shy, keeping their distance as they graze. Some wallow lazily in the mud, while others wander closer, still cautious of human presence. One bull stands proudly on a small rise, chewing grass with slow deliberation—he seems to be the boss of the herd, calmly surveying his domain.

    Savvaļas bullītis Engures ezera pļavās

A lone black cow lingers far from the group, looking slightly out of place, almost as if excluded. Life in the animal kingdom is surely worthy of a soap opera.

Also, did you know that these cows are here to help maintain the meadows naturally? Their grazing ensures the landscape thrives in its intended state. Quite a fascinating discovery!

    Say Hi to Horses

The horses in Lake Engure nature park, however, are the opposite of the shy cows. Their curiosity and confidence bring them right up to visitors. Whether they’re hoping for a treat or simply basking in admiration, they stand gracefully on the paths, unbothered as people walk around them, cameras in hand. You notice some travelers have come prepared, pulling out bags of carrots and apples that the horses eagerly munch on. I do not know if it is actually allowed to feed these animals or not. So please do your research before offering them a treat.

    Zirgi Engures ezera pļavās

The herd we encounter in Lake Engure nature park today includes five horses, their coats ranging from soft gray-brown to rich dark chestnut. They seem slightly smaller than the horses people ride, but their wild beauty is captivating. From their sturdy build to their gentle, watchful eyes, it’s clear they are perfectly at home in this untamed landscape.

As we stroll back to our car, after saying our goodbyes to the inhabitants of Engure lake meadows, we realize we’ve missed one feature of this nature park—the Orchid trail. Oh well, I guess it’s a reason to come back.

    Thoughts?

Lake Engure Meadows is a haven of peace, a perfect stop for those seeking a quiet connection with nature. It is also one of the few places in Latvia where you can encounter wild horses up close. Families with children, couples on romantic walks, and groups of friends all wander the paths, marveling at the wild horses and cows that call this place home.

So I believe it would appeal to people of many different paths. Unless you are afraid of horses or cows. If that is the case, this probably won’t be the place for you.

Līču – Lanģu Cliffs in Latvia– 5 out of 5 Stars

When you think of towering cliffs, Latvia might not be the first place that springs to mind. While the country boasts plenty of intriguing rock formations, they often lack the dramatic scale seen elsewhere. But hidden within the lush forests not far from Cēsis lies a whole other world. Welcome to the Līču–Lanģu Trail—a place of towering sandstone cliffs, mystical engravings, and natural wonders waiting to be discovered.

Lace up your hiking boots, grab some water, and let’s uncover the secrets of the Līču–Lanģu cliffs together!

How to get there: Driving. Or you can take train to Lode. But the trains aren’t that frequent.

    Izmaksas: bezmaksas

Accesibility: there are a lot of stairs and climbing over trees and other obstacles so the trail isn’t suited for people with mobility issues or baby strollers

The Challenge of Finding Līču-Lanģu Cliffs

The forest keeps its secrets well, and the Līču–Lanģu cliffs aren’t the easiest to find. We were tricked and almost left without seeing the best part of this trail. But don’t worry—this time, I’m here to guide you and point out what to look for.

    Lode Quarry

After parking the car, we step into the forest and begin our journey. The first clue that you’re on the right path is the Lode Clay Quarry—an expansive valley with grayish-brown tones, uneven terrain, and only a hint of vegetation. It’s not quite a walk on Mars, but the otherworldly landscape might make you feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet—or perhaps Earth after an apocalypse.

First Cliff on Līču – Lanģu Trail is Just a Teaser

The first cliffs that can be easily recognised by their half circle shaped arches and distinctive orange colour is the next sign you are looking for.

    Klintis Līču - Lanģu takā

Not that hard to find? True. But when we visited last time, this is where things went off track. While there are some signposts along the way, they can be a bit confusing. We ended up heading straight, wandering in a loop through the forest, only to return to the same spot—without glimpsing a single cliff. And we saw another bunch of travelers making the same mistake.

If you’ve ever been let down by photos of grand landmarks that turned out far less impressive in real life, it’s easy to feel discouraged at this point. But we didn’t give up. With determination (and a closer look at the map), we finally found the key to continuing our adventure.

    So here it is.

If you’ ll head right, you’ll find beauty. If you head left you’ll find an adventure.

Turn Right to Discover the Mystical Letter “S” on the Līču – Lanģu Trail

Here lies what is arguably the most stunning rock formation along the Līču–Lanģu Trail. This natural masterpiece features organic shapes that resemble a portal or a locked gate to a hidden world beneath the mountain. On one side, there’s even a tiny “window” where you might imagine a troll guard sitting and watching over those who are trying to figure out the cliffs’ secrets.

The cliff is draped in moss, its surface adorned with countless engravings etched over the decades. Among them you spot a mysterious letter “S”—a mark that seems crafted with great skill and care. What could it signify? Is it a coat of arms, or perhaps the key to unlocking the stone gates to a secret world of trolls?

Līču Lanģu klints ar burtu S

Turn Left to Discover the Majestic Cliff Wall of the Līču – Lanģu Trail

The rumors are true—on the Līču–Lanģu Trail, you’ll find cliffs reaching up to an impressive 30 meters high.

After returning to the first cliffs and heading left, the real adventure begins. At first, it seems the trail may not lead to anything remarkable, with the cliffs concealed behind the dense forest. But then, the trees part, revealing one of the forest’s best-kept secrets: a towering rock wall that will accompany us for the rest of the hike. It’s a breathtaking sight, both grand and humbling.

    Līču Lanģu klinšu taka

The path has it’s challenges, with ups and downs and the occasional rotten branch to climb over. But it also has some delightful surprises along the way. You’ll pass spots where water, unstoppable in its persistence, quietly carves through the sandstone. There are also countless engravings from travelers before you—one boldly marked 1937. Could it really be that old, or is someone playing a clever trick?

Further along, the trail reveals large vaults carved into the cliff wall. Another traveler pauses to snap a photo, joking that we’ve stumbled upon the “Little Gutmanis Cave,” a playful nod to Sigulda’s famous landmark.

    Thoughts?

The Līču–Lanģu Trail is undeniably an exciting destination for a hike. That said, it’s important to note that it might not be suitable for everyone—be prepared for plenty of climbing, kneeling, and bending along the way. Despite the challenges, I’d rate this trail a solid 5/5 stars. Even the tricky task of finding the right path didn’t dampen the experience. In fact, I might go so far as to call it one of the most impressive nature trails in Latvia. I know that’s a bold statement, but Līču–Lanģu Trail truly delivers. Around every corner, there was something new to marvel at, and the towering cliffs left me absolutely speechless.

Is the Kazu Grava Waterfall as Magical in Reality as in Photos?

Can it really be that breathtaking in person? That’s exactly what I wanted to find out about the Kazu Grava Waterfall. Is it truly as stunning as it seems, or is it just the right photo angle?

Spoiler alert: the Kazu Grava Waterfall is every bit as magical as the pictures suggest—maybe even more. It’s like stepping into a fantasy world, a hidden place where elves or woodland fairies may live. The enchanting Seven Springs Waterfall is hands down one of the most beautiful natural gems I’ve seen in Latvia. If you’re near Cēsis and wondering what to explore, this should top your list.

    Location: Kazu Grava

    Cost: Free

How to get there: Only by car.

    Finding Kazu Grava Waterfall

Now, let me save you from a potential misstep. I know of people who reached the general area, found no road signs or markers, got confused, and sadly drove away, missing out entirely.

Here’s the trick: there are no signs along the main paved road. I believe that because this is actually a private property, so please be respectful. Park your car nearby the place that the navigation takes you to. You’ll see a dirt path. Follow it.  Keep going, and soon you’ll step into the forest, where a sign welcomes you to the Kazu Grava territory. That’s when the magic begins.

The Seven Cascade Waterfall Straight out of Fairytale

Follow the sound of gently cascading water, and you’ll arrive at a sight so enchanting it feels otherworldly. The waterfall isn’t just a single stream—it’s a series of tiny, delicate streams flowing over moss-covered rocks, creating a serene symphony of water.

It’s hard not to imagine mythical creatures frequenting this place. It feels like the kind of secret spot where forest elves would gather under the moonlight to bathe. Even though the waterfall isn’t entirely natural, its charm is undeniable.

As you make your way down the trail to the waterfall, you’ll pass a striking limestone rock face, known as the avotkaļu (an approximate translation would be spring smits) wall. The unique terrain here adds another layer of charm to your visit.

After soaking in the beauty of the waterfall, don’t stop there. This spot is perfect to combine with other natural or historical attractions nearby.

We stood mesmerized for a long time, simply watching the water flow—it’s the kind of peaceful, meditative moment that stays with you. And, of course, we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos. You can get surprisingly close to the waterfall, but please, tread lightly. This is a protected area, so please do not climb on the rocks for the sake of a perfect photo isn’t the best idea. Let’s keep this magical spot pristine.

    Thoughts?

The Kazu Grava Waterfall is a short but unforgettable experience. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it. The stop itself is brief, so I’d recommend pairing it with a nature trail or another destination to round out your day.

While I visited these spots on separate trips (as the photos reveal different seasons), they’re perfect for a single, fun and sightseeing filled itinerary. Let’s go!

Cost: Sights are free, only thing you have to pay for is the parking near Veczemju cliffs

Vidzeme Coast – One Shoreline, Three Unique Atmospheres

The Vidzeme coast is like a patchwork quilt, where each stop offers a distinct character and atmosphere. Here, nature invites you to slow down, explore, and take in its many moods.

Veczemju Cliffs – The Iconic Landmark of the Vidzeme Coast

    Location

You’ve likely heard of the Veczemju Cliffs – they’re practically celebrities, even starring in movies. But have you had the chance to see them in person?

I’ll admit, when we set out for Veczemju Cliffs, my mind was solely on the cliffs themselves. What intricate shapes would the weathered sandstone reveal? What stunning photos could I capture? But once we arrived, my perspective shifted.

The cliffs are undeniably beautiful, with their flowing forms, weathered by wind and waves, and their vibrant orange hues glowing in the sunlight. However, they occupy only a modest stretch of the coastline, and exploring them doesn’t take long – that is, unless you count the time spent waiting in line to snap a photo at the most Instagram-famous alcove.

Before long, you’ll find yourself looking for other ways to enjoy the area – and that’s where the magic of the rocky seashore comes into play.

    The Vidzeme Rocky Coastline

Although the cliffs are nice, what truly captivates me is the rocky beach surrounding them. The further you wander from the cliffs, the wilder and more rugged the shore becomes.

As the seashore soon turns into an obstacle course, not everyone ventures this far, but for those who do, the reward is solitude and a connection with the untamed beauty of the sea.

Near Veczemju cliffs there is also a campsite where you can rent picnic spots. This is also the place you will have to leave your car as there is no free parking available nearby.

Once you’ve explored, taken your photos, and perhaps climbed a few rocks, it’s time to move on to the next chapter of the Vidzeme coast adventure.

Randu Meadows – A Peaceful Oasis on Vidzeme Coast

    Location

Randu meadows during the summer time may just be the most peaceful place in Latvia.

The vast green expanse of Randu Meadows stretches boldly across the landscape, even daring to reach into the sea – a truly unique sight. These meadows are a paradox, feeling both empty and full of life.

Randu pļavas ko apskatīt Vidzemes piekrastē

The grasses buzz with the quiet activity of insects, while the air hums with birdsong, creating a harmonious natural symphony. As you wander along the wooden boardwalk, be careful not to step on another piece of this diverse ecosystem – a little lizard basking in the sun.

At the heart of the meadows, you’ll find a charming wooden structure, perhaps a barn, lending a rustic touch to the scene. Nearby, a herd of cows grazes leisurely in their vast pasture, adding a countryside feel to the scene. And don’t miss the observation tower – a small but worthwhile climb that offers a panoramic view of this enchanting meeting point between land and sea.

Take one more deep breath of the fresh air, and then we are headed to our last stop of the day. Be prepared – it will be impressive.

Ainaži Pier – The Jewel of the Vidzeme Coastline

    Location

Ainaži Pier is like something out of a fantasy tale – a massive stone path that stretches into the sea. Walking along it, you might imagine it was built for giants, with its enormous rocks carefully laid at the start and gradually scattered by the force of nature as you move further out. Or maybe it was a giant who got angry and started to kick and throw rocks around. Who knows.

The pier’s raw, rugged beauty makes it one of the most unforgettable places along the Vidzeme coast. The sound of waves crashing against the stones and the feeling of standing in the middle of the sea are simply magical.

What’s Next? By the time you’ve reached Ainaži Pier, you’re already one foot in Estonia. So if your wanderlust isn’t satisfied why not explore our northern neighbour?

    Ainažu mols

    Thoughts?

I’ve always enjoyed the sea. And each stop along the Vidzeme coast offers something different: the majestic cliffs, the peaceful meadows, and the untamed pier. Together, they create a journey that’s as varied as it is beautiful, leaving you with moments that linger long after the waves have faded from view.

A Hike from Lilaste, Latvia to the Mouth of the Gauja River

Tired of the urban hustle and bustle? Craving a dose of nature’s tranquillity? Look no further than the stunning coastal region of Lilaste, where the mighty Gauja River meets the Baltic Sea. This unique area offers both coastal views and a hike through forest in various difficulty levels. And the best part is: you can adjust the duration and difficulty level from a relaxing walk by the sea to a full day hike. The world is your oyster!

3 Different Ways to Spend a Day in Lilaste. Latvia:

    1. Start your hike in Lilaste and follow the seashore, choosing the mouth of the Gauja River as your destination (easy);
    2. Combine the walk on the seaside with a hike in a beautiful pine forest. You can set the Garezeri lakes as your goal (medium).
    3. Skip the hiking part and simply go and enjoy the beauty of nature by sitting on a pine tree uprooted by the roots near the mouth of the Gauja River and drinking some tea you’ve brought along (super easy);

A Walk Along the Seashore in Lilaste, Latvia

As you embark on your journey from Lilaste, the pristine sandy shores stretch out before you, inviting you to a serene stroll. The place is perfectly fitted for both a romantic walk with deep conversations or a long walk in solitude to sort out your thoughts.

But the further you venture, the more the landscape transforms. The coastline becomes rugged and dramatic, with washed-out shores and uprooted pine trees. It looks like an angry giant has stumbled through here and punched and thrown everything around. But the highlight is definitely  the confluence of the Gauja River and the Baltic Sea, where freshwater meets saltwater.

Into the Lilaste Woods: Nature Park Piejūra

For those seeking a more adventurous experience or those who just want to switch up the scenery, the nearby Piejūra Nature Park offers a labyrinth of winding trails through lush forests. If you wish to explore further you can set finding Garezeri – a row of 3 dark forest lakes as your goal.

The area near the mouth of the River Gauja is more clear, with less bushes or other challenges to conquer. The walk here is quite relaxing, as the soft carpet of moss beneath your feet muffles every step, creating a peaceful ambiance.

But as you delve deeper into the woods, you encounter terrain with some hills and ditches creating a natural obstacle track. But that’s what you’re here for right? A bit of an adventure. Just look at the roe deer jogging through the forest: the relief is no obstacle to them!

    Garezeri
    Garezeri, Lilaste Latvia

In summary, I think this place is for those who are looking to enjoy some fresh air and movement rather than hunting for sights, as there are no giant rocks or castle ruins . But it is easily accessible, beautiful and offers a variety of natural scenery. It’s also positive that the level of activity and the length of the route can be adjusted to your abilities and desires. We walked a total of about 15 km (from Lilaste to the mouth of the Gauja River, then through the forest to the Garezeri lakes and back to Lilaste), but as I mentioned several times, the route can be as long as you choose it to be.

  • What to See in Bauska, Latvia? Bauska Day Trip Itinerary

What to See in Bauska, Latvia? Bauska Day Trip Itinerary

There’s a place in Latvia where roses never wilt, and a fairytale castle stands tall on the riverbank. Rumor has it that this castle has recently undergone a facelift and is now more stunning than ever. Intrigued? Well, that enchanting town is called Bauska.

I recently found myself wandering its streets. So I can offer you an (almost) live report on what you can find inside the belly of Bauska castle as well as to give you some ideas on what to see in Bauska, Latvia.

    Location: Bauska, Latvia

Cost: Some objects has an entrance cost (links bellow)

Length: ~5,5km from bus station to all attractions and back

How to get there: Public transport or driving.

    What to See in Bauska:

Why take a day trip to Bauska, Latvia?

Let me tell you, Bauska isn’t just charming—it’s convenient! You won’t need a royal carriage (aka a car) to get there. Which I know is an issue for some of the travelers. A simple bus ride from Riga will do the trick, and once you arrive, the town is very walkable. The entire route in this article covers about 5.5 km, so you’ll get your steps in without breaking too much sweat.

To Reach Bauska Castle, Follow Bauska Nature Trail

If you’re arriving in your private chariot, feel free to drive straight to the castle. But as we are on foot today, I suggest we take the scenic route along Bauska Nature trail. It follows the river and is separated from the rest of the city by a ground embankment, so we can imagine we are trying to sneak into the castle unnoticed.

Now, I’ll be honest: in February, the scenery might look a bit sad. At this time of the year most of the places in Latvia look as if all the color has been sucked out of them.

But trust me, in any other season, it’s bound to be more vibrant and cheerful. And even in winter’s gray grasp, the trail is far more interesting than the day to day city scenes.

    Bauskas dabas taka

The highlight of the Bauska Nature Trail is the “Corner of Happiness.” Here, you can capture the perfect photo with the castle already framed—no need for Instagram filters.

You may have to have a little battle with the wind, as the frame turns in every breeze as if it had the mind of its own. But if that happens, don’t stress. Just punch it back to the position you wanted. It may be a bit of a challenge, but from the bright side – it is more customizable this way.

But now – let’s explore the most popular attraction to see in Bauska.

What to See in Bauska Castle?

    Location: Bauska Castle

Cost: There is an entrance fee. Check ticket prices and working hours.

Bauska Castle is like a labyrinth.

Some stairs take you up, others down, and there are countless doors leading to an almost endless number of rooms to explore.

The entrance fee is a bit steep at 9 euros, but honestly, the castle is impressive enough to justify the cost. And if you’re still undecided, you can always admire its grandeur from the outside for free.

Discover the Grand Rooms of Bauska Castle

With each room you enter, you’ll notice an unusual pattern—the halls become emptier and emptier as you go. But oh, how grand they are!

High ceilings soar above you, thick stone walls hold centuries of stories, and the decorative fireplaces give each room character.

There aren’t many pieces of furniture, but the ones you do find are as grand as the rooms themselves. Massive wooden desks, intricately carved chests, and unbelievably small beds. And it makes sense – before the era of consumerism people just had way less stuff.

    Bauskas pils guļamistaba

I always find the kitchen the most intriguing part of any historic estate. There’s always something surprising. For instance, this massive pestle looks like it could crush anything. What would you even use it for? Surely not herbs?

Virtuve ko var apskatīt Bauskas pilī

Although many of the items are replicas of long-lost originals, as long as the place is able to set the vibe, it does not bother me. And Bauska’s Castle definitely makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Learn Something New in Historic Exhibitions at Bauska Castle

The castle also houses several exhibitions featuring ancient objects, weapons, and costume reproductions.

Overall, exploring the grounds is a lot of fun, but get ready for my favorite part of Bauska castle – the tower.

Bauska Castle Tower: A Panoramic Perspective

As you enter the tower, something moving on the ground catches your eye. What is it? A ghost?

You are a bit cautious, but gather the courage to approach it. Turns out it’s a projection telling the story of how Bauska Castle has evolved over the centuries.

Then, you look up where the guts of the tower unfolds in front of you. You can see all the intricate details—the bare walls, wooden beams, and the roof. It’s like you’re peering into the tower’s very soul.

    Bauskas pils tornis

The best part? You can climb the stairs to take in the views from above. It’s hard to say whether the views are more impressive from the top or the bottom. What’s your take?

    Bauskas pils torņa iekšpuse

Before our trip, I tried to find out if there was an observation tower where we could see the city from above, as that is something I try to do in every city. But I couldn’t find any information. So discovering the Bauska Castle tower was a very pleasant surprise.

What to See in Bauska Other Than The Castle

Bauska also offers a couple of quick photo spots to include on your what to see in Bauska list—beautiful, interesting places that are worth a stop but won’t require more than a few minutes to take in the view. So let’s do a speed run!

    Colourful Bauska Town Hall

    Location: Bauska Town Hall

The Town hall is a neat, rosy building with a tower. Inside, you’ll find a tourism information center.  Click-click! And a picture is ready.

The Evergreen Rose Alley of Bauska

    Location: Rose alley

Right next to the Bauska Museum, there is an avenue of never wilting roses.

Look carefully! What do you see here?

    Mājas stūris Bauskas rožu alejā

The more I look, the more interesting this place seems. At first, you probably notice houses worn by time, with fabric roses attached to the walls. But soon, you’ll realize how perfectly these romantic flowers complement the weathered buildings, creating a poetic contrast.

    Bauskas rožu aleja

Walking by the street you spot a sign on one of the houses. “Come in the courtyard” it says. Hmm. Is that “Come to the dark side we have cookies?” type of a thing?

    Plakāts ienāc pagalmā

Such signs always make me a bit suspicious, but just around the corner, I can spot a glimpse of a mosaic fragment. I’d read earlier that there’s a fish mosaic somewhere in Bauska, so I think this is not a trap and it’s safe to proceed and snap a picture of that, too.

    Bauskas zivju mozaīka

Lastly, it is time for another more substantial tourist attraction in Bauska. We have to cross the river to get to this one.

Learn Surprising Facts in Bauska Motor Museum

    Location: Bauska Motor Museum

Cost: Has an entrance fee. Check entrance fees and working hours.

Can you spot what this car is missing? That’s right—mirrors.

One of the many interesting things you can learn at the Bauska Motor Museum is that mirrors weren’t always included in a car’s base equipment. They were actually optional accessories. Can you imagine? I shudder at the thought of road safety back in those days.

    Retro auto Bauskas motormuzejā

The museum staff are very knowledgeable and eager to share fascinating facts about the retro cars on display. I’m someone who usually distinguishes cars by color, yet I am still intrigued by what a vintage fire truck and a trailer-summer house looked like.

If you are not yet convinced, here’s another fun fact: did you know that cars without roofs used to be cheaper than fully enclosed ones? Why? Well, you’ll have to visit the Bauska Motor Museum on your own and ask the staff to find out.

Retro auto ko iespējams apskatīt Bauskā

With this our list of things to see in Bauska comes to an end and it is time to go back to the bus station to get back to Riga. Good that these buses run quite a few times a day!

    Thoughts?

I would classify a day trip to Bauska as a very educational adventure as I learned a lot of interesting things. And as the 2 key attractions of Bauska – the Castle and Motor Museum are indoors, this is a great trip idea for the more gloomy seasons where there isn’t that much to do outdoors. But bring the coat anyways, as it gets quite chilly inside those castle walls.
