Lithuania—so similar to my home country, Latvia, yet with its own unique set of attractions. From art and history in the streets of Vilnius to quiet corners where you can have a one-on-one encounter with nature, this country offers a diverse experience. This is where I first saw Chinese lanterns (unexpected, I know) and where I learned what a mineral water graduation tower is. But I am sure there are many more fascinating places in Lithuania, waiting to be discovered.

Why travel to Lithuania?
For people from Latvia, a day trip or a weekend trip to Lithuania offers an easy escape that doesn’t require too much planning. It’s a great way to broaden your horizons when you’ve already explored much of your home country. Despite sharing many similarities with its Baltic neighbours, Lithuania has its own distinct character and unique attractions waiting to be discovered.
For those travelling from further away, Lithuania offers a chance to experience the more fun and quirky side of the Baltics. Beyond the well-known landmarks of Vilnius Old Town, you’ll find unusual attractions, peaceful nature spots, seasonal events (like the pink soup festival), and unexpected discoveries that make travelling in Lithuania memorable. It’s a destination that can surprise you, whether you’re planning a Lithuania road trip, or a longer Baltic adventure.
How many days do you need in Lithuania?
If you’re visiting only Vilnius, in my opinion the weekend is enough. Similar rule of thumb applies to other cities like Klaipeda and Šauļai. So if you want to do a longer Lithuania road trip I would suggest 2 days for Vilnius + 2 extra days (including the driving time) for every additional city you’d like to add.
Can you visit Lithuania without a car?
You can visit parts of Lithuania with only using public transport – e.g. you don’t need a car to visit Vilnius or Klaipeda. But to get to the smaller towns and nature attractions you would need to drive.
